Not finished / Ragequit

Ragequit on page 411. I could not take anymore. Here is my review: ( yes I dare to review it )

It has indeed a very nice writing style. Scenery and characters are excellent presented and very good described. At the beginning I highly enjoyed the lively characters. And that is it with my positive notes.
Reasons for not finishing it :
-The same things happen over and over and over and over again. *talk about war* *scarlett is upset* *talk about war* *scarlett does this* *talk about war* *scarlett does that* *talk about war* *scarlett is upset* etc. etc. .
- I dont mind some historical facts, but this contains elements of a history book. It keeps interrupting the story and the flow.
- The book is downright racist. The parts where the native africans speak are unreadable.
- There is no progress in the story at all. No wonder why it is 1420 pages long! It took 411 pages for something which could have happened in a prologue!!!

I started reading and finished three other books during this one. It is just utterly booooring!!!

Laura Quite horrible isn't it? How did it become such a "classic"?

Angie Fehl I'm with you Ragequit, I'm struggling with this one. I love classics generally but this one is a slog-fest. It's been on my nightstand for a month and a half, I read a chapter here and there, but I've read about 4 other books since starting it. My husband asked me about the other books one day and I just flat out said "I need in between breaks!" I do like the character of Rhett, because he doesn't apologize for the way he is, even laughs about it, but GAAWD Scarlett is irritating!

@Laura and @Angie:
:) Exactly! I totally agree. As I said, some parts are good, but the overall experience is unbearable! Cut out the exposition and history facts, cut out the repetitive Scarlett and we would have a nice read. :)

A nice read - that would be about a page long. :-)

message 5: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura deLuna all books written before the 1950's are like that. instead of furthering the plot or whatever authors do to get the story going along they spend five pages at the beginning of each chapter talking about the world crisis of the time then a few pages more about the scenery then a few more about the weather.

it makes the story so slow that its torture to read a single page.

i finally gave up on steady reading and relegated it to toilet literature (those are the books i read while im using the bathroom because... well sometimes it takes a while and if i have something i have to read then i bring it in with me and suffer through it rather than staring blankly at the wall)
