I was curious how Scalzi would update the dated science in the original. He does something much cleverer instead, which is work it so that all that protracted discussion of the issues regarding the mentality of the creatures isn't necessary - basically there is a cute plot twist that yields a "show, don't tell" proof of the creatures' sapience. So noone will be reviewing this book in 40 years lamenting that the science is dated.

Other than that - aside from a little too much explanation of the setting in the early chapters, it's fast moving and fun and the characters (human and non) are vivid and oh, just read it.
