bookshelves: to-read, failed-to-finish

Every time I get to the part (second discourse, same as the first)that cuts away from the story and characters to lecture at us about the sexes and their roles and I don't know what, I put this down. Roth does that, too. Irritating. How can they be considered preeminent if they can't weave their ideology into the narrative and the characters?
