The author isn't the first to have this idea but she probably did it best. Enjoyable but scholarly enough to make the cut. Her best work was the story of the incomparable Eleanor of Aquitaine. Elizabeth I was magnificent but when it comes to guts, gumption and political brilliance, Eleanor has no peers. I do wish she would get the recognition she deserves. I was delighted with all the author's choices except Margaret. I'm not sure she deserves inclusion. She does win for worst husband, most complex story--and also the most boring. If you skip that chapter, the book is fine.
