I read this book as soon as I was able to read, which was later than most as I was a slow learner. One of my aunties bought this book for me at a market in Doncaster. It was a going away present only months before I set sail on a ship when I left England and moved to Australia with my family. I remember carrying it with me everywhere and reading it over and over. I would lie in my bunk on the ship and imagine I was in Jules Verne's story. I still have it and treasure it. Now my little grand children enjoy it and love looking at the pictures.
In this story the protagonist, Phileas Fogg, an English gentleman, makes a wager with other members of his club to travel the world in eighty days. The story is full of excitement and adventure as Phileas Fogg gets two days ahead of his schedule, but of course things eventually go wrong and he ends up getting two days behind instead, becoming separated from his companions. This all leavs the reader on the edge of their seat as they wait for him to catch up. I don’t want to spoil the plot for other readers, so I won’t say much more, just that it’s a delightful story and will keep you turning the page. A true classic in my books and so well written. Highly recommended for all ages.
