really liked it
bookshelves: non-fiction
Read in June, 2007

I read this book right before and when I was in China last summer, and I found it really helpful for understanding China today. It certainly seems to be cheating to read a book about China written by a westerner who lives there, but only someone from the west would know what it is that we westerners would find new and different. The author is the New Yorker's beijing correspondant and has lived in China since he served in the Peace Corps there, and I found his stories and descriptions fascinating.
