I pile a world of judgment on myself when I read this book. It's trashy, heavy-handed, eco-feminist ridiculousness with a penchant for clumsy narrative jumps and ramble-pamble internal monologues. Guys. Guys. I cry every time I read this book. Every time! Partly this is because I usually reach for this book when I'm deliriously ill, and reading in the fetal position predisposes me to respond well to melodrama, but partly this is because it's great melodrama! I clutched my heart when the Clan lady promises to name her daughter after Ayla, and my nose felt distinctly as if I had eaten horseradish when Ayla has to leave her son at the end. :: Loffs this book :: :: Feels bad about it tho ::
