Though told very simply, I loved this story. It is a great introduction to the Sudan and the issues resulting from a lack of water. There are some harsh conditions and violent episodes that occur in the story as the main character makes his way away from the fighting to a refugee camp, and then another one. The switching back and forth between the 1980s and the 2000s was also very effective. This story could be used well in the classroom for talking about natural resources, the power of one person to make a difference, and how hope and persistence can see one through horrendous circumstances.
