This is a story of a Carmelite nun who, while thirsting for God's presence in her life, begins to have spiritual visions. However, these visions are accompanied by headaches and vertigo, and after consulting a doctor she learns she has a form of curable epilepsy. Faced with the choice of living with our without the visions, she struggles and finally decides to have surgery and continue her spiritual life without the hyper-supernatural. I was intrigued by this unusual storyline, and relieved that the text was spare and simple, but I ultimately felt as though Salzman didn't quite enter fully into the character. Sister John seemed not quite three-dimensional...
