The title of this book is great and expresses that almost universal feeling children have about their parents. Even though they look good and take good care of us, they can be so embarrassing. The book's protagonist, Emma, lists five things her mother and her father do that ruin her life, and then imagines the perfect life she can lead once they've been arrested for doing so. But as she thinks about a life without her parents, she realizes that she needs them and the nurturing things they do outweigh the embarrassing ones. The narrative became a bit chunky and awkward as the book moved to its finish, leaving me more impressed with the title than the follow-through. The watercolor illustrations really allow the expressions of all the characters to come through.
