it was ok
bookshelves: postcoloniallit
Read in January, 2008

Finished it 01/31, forget what date I started it.

The good thing about the book: you want to know what happens so you devour it.

The bad thing about the book: nothing makes you particularly linger and no one is really likable or compelling.

I found elements interesting (the double edged sword of the tribe's success, which both saved them and later caused their execution) but not enough to call it a great book. This is the weakest of all of Amy Tan's novels, in mu opinion. The best one being The Kitchen God's Wife, which still makes me cry.
