Let me start out by telling you the absolute worst thing about this book: the fact that it's over. I'm finished with the damn thing and I don't know how I am going to be able to wait to find out what will happen next.
The story begins with Cassie awaiting her coronation as Pythia. Mircea has her under constant guard; Pritkin is inundating her with self-defense training. Obviously, they're taking the threat of an attack very seriously. And they're right. A mysterious force targets Cassie in an assault and no one can understand how it was done. So Pritkin goes on a journey to Faerie to see what information he can dig up.
The only time the book dragged for me was in his absence. And perhaps Mircea fans will disagree, because for 100 pages or so, it's a Mircea-thon. He accompanies Cassie back in time to see her mother. But the plans get turned asunder as Mommy is kidnapped and attacked by dark mages. The rest of the action in the book centers on keeping Cassie's mother alive and figuring out what is behind the malevolent force targeting Cassie, herself.
But to me, all of that is window dressing for the fantastic interpersonal stuff that happens in this book. Cassie still isn't sure where she stands with Mircea and that confusion is compounded by his insistence on inflicting his will upon her. We get little more insight into his feelings for her as the book progresses. But where the story really shines is when the focus is on Cassie and Pritkin. He comes through for her time and time again; he is reliable; he is constant; he is selfless; and the sexual tension between them is Oh-My-God out of this world. Every book, I find myself wondering if this will be the one where Cassie realizes what she means to him --and what he means to her... Will this be the one where they finally, er, do the damn deed? I won't spoil you with the answers, but the journey is both amazing and riveting.
A couple of the action sequences were just a bit too long for my taste, and the mythological motivations explaining the main story arc were a bit complicated. But the climax was fantastic. And the ending left me gutted. We've got a big cliffhanger here; a powerful one. And I don't want to wait! Karen Chance, you are a cruel woman. I don't even know when the next book comes out. 5 stars.

I rarely say this, but I'm so jealous of you right now. If it's at all possible I'm even more anxious because of your cliffhanger comment. The 7th now seems like it's months away.

Miss Vain: I just started the series this week and read them all back to back!Cat: I'm sorry! Part of me wishes that I hadn't read it yet, because now I'll be left stewing on the cliffhanger for God knows how long. But at the same time, I'd never advise any fan of the series not to read it as soon as possible. It was really, really good.
Jen-I've been reading your reviews on this series and now I need to read this series as well. You're lucky you started this series late in the game because prior to the release of this fifth book, the last book in this series was published in April of 2009! Talk about withdrawals ;-)
That's why I originally gave all the books a 3 star rating. I had read them long before I ever created an account with Goodreads and I couldn't remember how much I liked each one. My bad memory just can't hold out that long.
I noticed you gave them three star ratings on the first few, but sometimes that's how I rate some series prior to falling in love with them, and I figured since our taste is similar it must turn out good! :-) but that also explains it too ;)

The series had to grow on me.
OK, great review, but for some reason the name Pritkin really gets me.Sounds like the name of crisps. If I dont like the hottie's name how am I supposed to like him.

Lol! I didn't get my notification for this one until now.....but I was going to put Terrible on the top of that list too!
Hmm, yeah you guys are right.Terrible is a good example but Terrible's name is so because he bad ass, where as Pritkins is just funny@Jen.John Pritkins is even more funny.LOL.
I will give it a try, who knows I might like Pritkins after all.
I also read this book in one sitting. I dislike the amount of time spent with Mircea until later on when Cassie was with Pritkin. The contrast was nice and I think that is why I was rooting for them more because Mircea is using her and Pritkin isn't.
Why! Why didnt I wait until I had an idea when the next is coming out again?????? Because it rocks, thats why!!!!!!! Now I get to re read it a million times and cry a million times until the cliffie is gone!
I just finished this book, and OMG it was amazing! I now can't wait to find out what happens in teh next book.
I liked that we saw more of Pritkin, and I didn't really realize until it said it that from the first book to this one it has only been 2 months, it feels like it has been longer then that!
I know, the date for the next book hasn't even been confirmed yet.Ah the cliff hanger is killing me! I want more Priktin.
Damn! It seems like ages between this one and teh last one, hopefully it won't be another long wait.Me too! Wasn't Pritkin amazing in this book?!
Jen have you read the new Karen Chance (Dory) book? I think it falls after this one in the timeline and I'm wondering if it resolves the major cliffhanger you mentioned?
