10 Reasons to Love Kate Daniels:
1. She doesn't take any crap from anyone.
2. She's sarcastic and occasionally rude and always hilarious. Who else would greet a snarly Beast Lord with "Here, kitty, kitty...?"
3. She knows all the rules of diplomacy when dealing with shapeshifters, vampires, and other supernaturals.
4. She knows how to break all those rules and commands respect in spite of it.
5. She admits when she makes mistakes.
6. She's comfortable with herself and who she is. But she's lonely too, and she isn't afraid to acknowledge it.
7. She has a lot of men in her life that she likes for different reasons. But she won't hesitate to call them out if she thinks they're crossing the line.
8. She has a huge amount of decency and integrity. Exhausted, hurt, bleeding, and hungry, she'll still stop eating when she thinks someone else is being slighted.
9. She wields a mean sword that she calls "Slayer" that she uses to kill all kinds of vicious creatures.
10. She kicks serious ass, with or without magic.
I have a hit-or-miss track record with most urban fantasy books that I've tried, but I think Kate and I are going to get along just fine. Can't wait to read the next book! And the one after that, and the one after that...

This series gets better with each book. I don't think you'll be disappointed as you continue!Great review Wendy!
Everyone kept warning me about this one, but I really enjoyed it...which I guess means I'll LOVE the rest! Not a perfect book by any means (and a little confusing in parts), but it was totally fun. Love love love Kate. :)
I tried to get into this one but I really couldn't. I think it's because it was the audio version. Maybe I will try the printed one.
There's a lot to keep track of, especially since you're getting used to the world-building, so I can see how it could come across as even more scattered on audio. I really liked it, though GQ. I have a hard time finding UF books I like, so this was a really pleasant surprise.
GenreQueen - I listened to the first two on audio, then switched to print for the others. I very much prefer these in print! The narrator really doesn't capture Kate's snarky sarcasm well, IMO. Try it in print!
I didn't like the narrator at all. It was the reason I quit listening. A narrator can make or brake a book
Yeah, I absolutely agree. I listen to quite a few audiobooks, so I have become somewhat of a narrator connoisseur. This one just isn't a good match for the book.
GenreQueen, I had a GR friend who listened to the first Kate on audio and didn't like it. We were all aghast because everyone loves Kate. So she decided to try the second one, but she skipped the audio and read it instead. And loved it. And she said the same thing Catie did--the narrator sucked at capturing Kate's smart & snarky voice. Don't give up on her. :)Wendy, so happy you loved the first one--they just get better and better. :)
That was fast! I had some problems with Kate in the first book, but that didn't last long. Now I'm actually glad that they took the time to build her as a character.
She has totally slayed me, Kathryn!I had no problems with Kate at all, Maja. :) I appreciate that they're building things slowly with the characters, but there wasn't a stupid cliffhanger. I'm going to have to resist speeding through this series.
At the time, I read urban fantasy almost exclusively. My standards were probably a bih higher than they are now. She did feel a little empty to me, great on the outside, but I didn't fully understand what makes her tick. Many things were revealed since then. :)Why resist? Go for it. :)
Well, I haven't read too much UF (not for lack of trying), so this was a happy reading experience for me. :) I have so many books to read, that's why I can't read the next four immediately! (view spoiler)
Spoiler tags are fun to play with. :)Well, if you liked Kate, I'm pretty confident that you'll like Gin, too (Elemental Assassin). And Kara Gillian.
My reading schedule is a mess these days. I just can't read fast enough. There are so many books I want right this second.
I want to read both EA and KG too. And ugh, I know...I read a lot already, but I still want another 10 hours in the day just to devote to reading.
Yeah, it's crazy. I was feeling like I was in a bit of a slump and couldn't decide what to read next, and now it's like I have too many things that I want to read all at once!
Thanks Amber! It wasn't hard to come up with that list at all. :)GoodReads is so bad for the TBR list, Catie. Since I became more active on the site a couple of months ago, it's pretty nuts how many books I've heard about that I want to read. But my average of good books to bad books has vastly improved, too!
Great review, Wendy. It's a great series and there are extras on the author's blog written from Curran's POV. Read after you read the 3rd or 4th book. I agree with you - Goodreads is horrible for that TBR list. Mine is about the same as yours - bloated.
Ohhh, thanks for that AH! I love it when authors do extras like that. I will definitely check out those snippets down the road.Good to know, April. :) I'm really happy to have found the series.
I also love this series, though I really liked the first book but had some problems with number 2 (Magic Burns). The rest just keep getting better!
That's so funny you say that, Helly--I read a couple chapters of Book Two already, but it's a bit of a slower start than this one, so I wonder if I will end up feeling the same way you do about it. Either way, it's nice to know the others will be getting even better. :)
The second book was not a wow book for me, either. It's the 3rd, 4th, and 5th books that are awesome. You'll enjoy them, I'm sure.
I loved #2, some of my fave quotes of the series come from that book. :)http://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/...
I agree, great quotes Laura Lulu. I just remember feeling that #2 dragged a bit. Still a good read, tho. I have bought the latest in the series, waiting for my upcoming holidays to really enjoy it.
I have a feeling their weakest book is still going to be better than most authors' best book. :) Bring some good reading material, Hellybelly! One of the greatest things about vacation is the luxury of being able to read.
This quote is all swoony: "He put the book down. “As you wish.” He rose and walked past me. I lowered my sword, expecting him to pass, but suddenly he stepped in dangerously close. “Welcome home. I’m glad you made it. There is coffee in the kitchen for you.” "awwwwwww
Book two tipped the scales for me with this series. For one thing, Julie entered the picture. And when Kate started really caring about someone, then I started really caring about Kate. Not only did she get Julie to fret over, but she started caring about Curran and Derek. And then Curran started his wooing with The Princess Bride...and it was all over for me.
But, the beginning of each book has been slow for me, because every book starts like a police procedural, which I always find yawny.
Totally agree, April. But for me, it was Derek, more than Julie, that did it for me. It was book two that made Kate more human, by fleshing out the side characters and Kate's relationships with them. And the "no one to make me coffee" and the subsequent "as you wish" quotes are probably my two faves from the series. Those, plus the ones about jumping off the building if Curran flexes, and her shouting verbal encouragements instead of spotting him. Which are both in book 2, also.
I like that we got to know Derek better too, Laura. (I finished book two yesterday.) I have to say I'm still not swoony over Curran yet, although he's intriguing...but maybe that will ratchet up in book three!
Reading through these comments really makes me want to pick up the second book. I really enjoyed this one and I think I may have a small crush on Curran. (Can't believe I just admitted that out loud.)
That's pretty fun, Cocopretty! I don't know if I picture Natalie Portman as Kate, but the sight of Chris Hemsworth is always welcome...
Your review made me add it to my to read list. The way you described Kate, that's exactly how I want main characters.
I couldn't have said it better! Kate poses the traits I look for in a heroine.I am totally in love with the series!
Have you read The Shadow Reader yet, Devina? You might like that one, it's another UF series with a really great heroine.
I haven't read it yet, but I it sounds great! It's on my top to read list after my reading ban is lifted!Cannot wait to get started! Thanks for the recommendation,Wendy!
Those are the best 10 reasons to read a book that i have ever heard. I love books where the main character is like Kate. As soon as next-month's paycheck rolls in, This will be on the top of my to-read list.
Aw, yay! I'm glad you're going to give Kate a chance, Hopelessromantic. :) I was just telling Devina on the post right before yours that I'd recommend The Shadow Reader as well--it's probably my favorite UF ever.
