A good author has the ability to create a wondrous tale; but, a great author has the ability to evoke strong emotions in readers by weaving a tale bursting with action, surprises and disappointment then making the reader appreciates it even though it may not be the outcome you expected or wanted. This is the case with Jennifer Estep. “Widow’s Web” was a non-stop emotional ride leaving me both breathless and brokenhearted. I began reading this book last night around 8:00 p.m. Hour after hour, I said, “Okay, I’m going to just finish this chapter and then I will put down the book for the evening.” Ha! It seems as though at the end of every chapter there was a cliffhanger leaving me dying to know more. Before I knew it, it I was on pg. 279 and it was 11 p.m.
Initially, Gin sets out on a job to infiltrate a business office in order to trap her prey. Although the offices have a good security system and there are guards, it is no match of the Spider. Of course, Gin takes out her target (I will not say who the target is). Let me just say, I truly enjoyed this moment. Then Gin and Owen go to dinner at a posh club where she notices Jonah McAllister sitting at a nearby table. This is where the story truly begins and Gin’s world becomes a little more complicated because McAllister’s dinner is none other than Salina, a former lover and fiancée of Owens. She is as deadly as she is beautiful because she has the power of water.
If that isn’t strange enough, Phillip Kincaid walks into the Pork Pit to enjoy a meal. He asks Gin to cater an event at his casino. She of course she is shocked and is wondering what he is up to and whether or not he plans to kill her. However, he pays her an insane amount of money and she agrees to the deal. Upon arriving at the event, Gin notices that the party is for a group of college kids attempting to earn donations for a charity. Violet and Eva are attending this assisting with this event much to Gin’s surprise. Kincaid’s long term friend and second in command is killed and he is almost taken out next. However, the killer gets away when Gin attacks. Soon, Gin realizes that Kincaid did have an alternative motive for having her cater the event but not what she originally thought. It quickly becomes clear that Kincaid, Eva and Owen has a complicated history and if Gin is going to keep Eva and Owen safe she will have to discover what it is.
This story is full of action and intrigue. Salina was an incredible villain and added an even greater vileness to the story line that rivaled Mab Monroe if that is possible. In the past, I viewed Phillip Kincaid as one of the bad guys; however, he has quickly become one of my new favorites. This was an incredible read even though at the end it left me heartbroken. Time after time Gin is called upon by friends and family to make the hard choices only to be left dealing with the ugly consequences. At this point, I am not sure what her future holds; but one thing for sure, it will be an exciting ride.
