Henry's world is turned upside down when his older brother Franklin is hit by a car. Henry's once rock solid family slows falls apart, and the only thing Henry can think to do is complete the climb that he and Frank were going to- Mt Katahdin. Along with his best friend Sanborn, Black Dog (the real star of the book), and Chay Chouan (who was the driver who struck Franklin), Henry's journey up the mountain becomes more than a climb.
Schmidt paints a detailed New England that you feel like you are there, and he has a great grasp on the feelings of a young teenage boy, grappling with grief, anger, despair, and the struggle to prove himself to his family.
