Palahniuk is playing with some powerful ideas, but he's not usually in control of his materials, and philosophically the book stalls pretty soon after it establishes its terms. (Plus there's the whole tiresome idea that men have an urge to punch and be punched as a way of escaping the claustrophobia of consumer culture. Yawn. Plus there's Palahniuk's boorish style, which unfortunately turns even his good ideas into pulp.) Still, the central conceit of a split personality--a day and a night self, a consumer and an un-consumer, a builder and a destroyer--is a nice metaphor for a life lived among information.
