Very well written, both through imagery as well as sociological viewpoints driven home. The contrasting lives of the characters were very real to me from the beginning. Interesting juxtaposition between the animals and the humans in the story. It made me sad to know this story represents a that of so many...but I have to admit that it also brought relief that we no longer live in Los Angeles in the middle of it all. (The problem doesn't exist anymore if I'm not there, right?) Ending was abrupt, but probably what it should have been. (Well done, one of the characters! No further spoiling.) I need to re-read the last few pages - I finished it on the last leg of a long flight and don't think I read very carefully. Excellent book.
