Misha is an 8- or 9-year-old boy living in Warsaw, Poland, at the dawn of the Nazi regime. He spends 200 pages of this book stealing food and being stupid--really really stupid. Actually, this boy seemed to be as dumb as a brick. Maybe an 8-year-old boy wouldn't understand why a soldier would have a Jewish man wash the sidewalk with his beard, but would an 8-year-old boy then assume that every Jew is supposed to wash the street with his beard? It's like he saw something once and then assumed that was how it was supposed to be every time. Every little thing had to be explained to him. Put two-and-two together for once, dummy! The kid had no street smarts at all. I also was bothered that he knew nothing of his past, even though we were given no explanation for it. The ending was very abrupt and weird, too.
