The first collection, this begins with Calvin going on a tiger hunt and using tuna sandwiches as lure. Having read most of the later books, this makes for interesting reading as Watterson settles into his style and rhythms and Calvin ‘s facial features gradually blend into his more recognisable version. Great fun, with all of the main characters introduced (including Roslyn), the stand-out strip this time around is probably the Christmas one. Calvin realises, with horror, that he hasn’t even made his friend a card, so Hobbes gives him a hug - “here’s a tiger hug, for being my best friend” - to which Calvin replies, “Not so hard, you big sissy, you squeeze my tears out”. Outstanding.
