Read the end of this when I got home last night and then had a hard time falling asleep because oooh! Veda! You just want to kill her! The story of a single mother's rise to success and the downfall of her pathetic love for the Worst Daughter Ever.

It certainly was compelling, though. Also having read the crazy Serenade I can't help but notice that James M. Cain here again presents a theory that the type of singer you are reveals your personality. Veda is a coluratura, which means she's a completely bitch who takes and never gives back. Who knew that kind of selfishness was connected to the ability to sing fast notes in opera!
