Adam Haslett’s inaugural collection of published stories is an impressive study of mental illness and sexual identity. Each story has characters that are struggling either with a debilitating psychological condition or with a burgeoning gay awareness, and shows how people who don’t fit into our culture’s idea of “normal” find connections, however tentative, to make it through daily life. The stories and characters are memorable, and Haslett has a poet's eye for the telling detail, especially evident in the superb endings he crafts for each story, often choosing to end on an image that projects the story into the future, making them stick with you long after the book is back on the shelf.
