I remember having to fight with kids in elementary school to check this out from the library. It became such an issue that the librarians had to create a list just for the Shel Silverstein books, and I queued up over and over again. For me these poems and illustrations were so subversive.. something that our parents and teachers probably didn't want us reading but they had to, because it was a book, and isn't that something they were supposed to be fostering in children.. a love of books? An early peek at the power of words and that a system's edicts could be used against it.
