I had no idea when starting this that it is really a Sword of Truth novel in disguise. It is a story of the people who wanted to live magic-free that Richard Rahl sent to another world. Unfortunately, the characters were too unbelievable (even for a fantasy) to put much stock in the storyline. The characters from the world of magic felt too weak while the main character from the magic-free world, Alex Rahl, seems to find things too easy. The end is a big let down with little tension to to bring the book to a satisfying conclusion. On top of that you have to listen to several of Goodkind's long-winded diatribes throughout the story, much like in TSoT series. Here, however, it is even more irritating. Worse, Goodkind left the gate open for a sequel, which I doubt very much I will read (and this all from a fan of TSoT series.
