I read this when I fell ill on a study trip to Italy in 1994.

I remember it being a bit like a pulp paperback, but perhaps more densely written. I thoroughly enjoyed it at the time because it showed me aspects of the medical world about which I had no idea. I went out with a doctor several years later, and used to amuse him by spouting facts I'd remembered from this book, which turned out to be accurate.

My point in saying all of this is that it was both an enjoyable read and a source of interesting information. Reading other reviews here, I may have forgotten the intricacies of the plot, which I remember as compelling at the time, and yet some aspects of the book have remained in my mind, 17 years on, so it must have been a worthwhile read.
