Sherry Freedom by Jonathan Franzen will be an important literary piece in the American canon. It tells the story of a couple, Patty & Walter, from their teens to their mid fifties. It tells the story of their best friend, Robert, and of their children, Joey and Jessica. In telling their story, Franzen addresses the American suburban culture and society of the baby boomers and their kids. He holds a mirror to us and asks us to question our values and our dreams. I've never read such a well written book that takes the microcosm of a nuclear family to make such powerful observations and criticisms of our county.
