I happen to be a very tough critic when it comes to literature that delves into the realm of mental health and its institutions. Working over 15 years in the field will do that to you. With that being said, I can tell you that this is a must read for anyone in the field or anyone with a loved one in the system. I highly recommend this book to any mature YA reader wether they have or have not spent time inpatient. Readers will connect with Anna's character and those of her "inmates." Anna's voice is authentic, honest and hysterical! I found myself laughing out loud so many times while reading this novel that I know my family wanted to committ me too! The author, a middle school librarian draws on her own experiences as a teen. Julie's students and readers are lucky to have her in their corner. I'm sure she has made an impact in the lives of many young people through her work. I look forward to reading more!
