Boy Toy
by Barry Lyga
by Barry Lyga
Barry Lyga. He went there. Joshua Mendel had a sexual relationship with his history teacher, Evelyn Sherman. He was twelve years old. She was twenty four. Even though "Eve" was sent to jail five years ago (he is now eighteen) the memories of it still haunt him. The novel begins with him learning that she's been let out of jail. What does he do now?
Lyga deserves a lot of credit for taking on the topic of molestation and its ramifications. The psychology of the book is fascinating, and the ending a bit surprising. The book doesn't hold any punches, for certain. Part of me still can't believe that this is a YA book, but another part of me is glad that it is. These topics are something that increasingly needs to be broached. Especially with the internet, and all the information that it provides to kids.
Sex is a complicated topic. This book deals with it, in all its facets, in a truly admirable way.
