Erin Morgenstern had fun creating her world of illusionists, palm readers, acrobats, and cats for her novel The Night Circus but somehow she wasn’t able to convey that to this reader. Illusion is a fabulous construct to use in a story...I admit I looked forward to being deceived. But I thought the story as gossamer-thin as a veil before the eyes, and was actually bored until a glimmer of hope arrived (late, I thought) in the form of a love story. But even that wasn’t really a love story. It was an illusion of a love story.
