When I was young, I read myself a fairy tale from a thick book before going to sleep. One of my favorites - that wasn't a Disney movie or a picture book - was the story of the Goose Girl. I was intrigued to see how an author would flesh out the story and deal with the more grisly details.

This book shows Shannon Hale as a skilled storyteller and gifted young adult writer. She creates a believable realm for a fantastic story of a young woman - namely the story in which she embraces who she is and her destiny. Hale doesn't shy away from the grim aspects of this story. Rather, she makes them the real results of when people struggle for power and identity.
