Full of fascinating insights and facts, this book takes the reader on a biographical tour of the English language from its humble origins as an obscure variant of a Dutch dialect to the most widely-spoken tongue on the planet. Medieval, Shakspearian/Elizabethan and Rennaisance developments are charted as are the latest changes which have been concentrated in the 'ex-colonies', particularly the USA, which is credited for a wide variety of creative expansions. serious but not high-brow, easy to read but well-researched, 'The Adventure of English' is a must for anyone interested in the developments of the langauge.
