I have to admit, I really liked this one. Ordinarily, I think I would have passed right over it (the cover art isn't particularly appealing), but something about the title encouraged me to give it a second look. When I noticed Patricia MacLachlan's name, I couldn't wait to read it. According to her note in the back, this was MacLachlan's attempt at explaining why she writes and what writing felt like to her as a child. The book handles this issue nicely, and the children are likeable characters. It reads a bit thinly (ie could have been developed more, I felt), but I suppose it serves its purpose. I can't imagine many children happily picking this up on their own, but I could see its use in schools or for other didactic purposes. Overall, I enjoyed it.
