I am a huge Greg Bear fan but was hesitant to try this one as it seemed out of his niche. I was very pleasantly surprised. There were elements of science fiction present in the novel, but it was basically a sad horror/ghost story. He handled the subject matter very well and was able to convey Peter's sense of loss to me very convincingly. The descriptions of Peter's emotions gave a very vivid picture of the turmoil he was experiencing, and I myself felt as if I had experienced the loss. Slightly predictable at the end, it did not diminish the story. Peter had a destiny and the road to it kept me on the edge of my seat even if I had figured out what it was. Another great Greag Bear novel.
