During the 1970s, the United States first began its struggle against terrorism. A renowned Special Forces officer, Colonel Charlie Beckwith, noticed this and began to see the need for a specialized unit within the US military that could counter that threat. In the mid 1970s, he found two other men who shared the same idea as him, Generals Bob Kingston and Edwin Meyer. The trio set out on their task of creating a new unit; the unit that would become the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment—Delta, or Delta Force. In this book one of the founding members, Eric Haney, describes the grueling selection process, and shares his story of the time that he spent in the unit. He describes missions from protecting ambassadors in Beirut, to retaking a hostage-held airplane and rescuing missionaries in Sudan. Inside Delta Force is the compelling story of the birth of the best black ops unit in the world: the United States Army’s Delta Force.

Even though this book is about the formation of a new military unit, I think that in today’s world it is relevant to almost anyone. We all live in a world were terrorism is a constant threat, and Delta Force was formed as a counter-terrorism force. With all of the threats we currently face, it is useful to know about a Special Operations team that keeps citizens of every country in the world safe. That being said, I don’t think you should read Inside Delta Force if you are against violence or find it offensive. The book is about a unit whose job is to kill terrorists and anyone who wishes violence upon Americans, so missions in which this takes place are described in vivid detail. But if you are okay with the violence that is necessary to keep us safe, than I encourage you to read this novel. Haney’s book is fabulously written, and keeps you reading till the end.
