I think this book was supposed to be funny, but it...wasn't. It was mostly just pathetic.
First, the main character, John Spencer. I think he's supposed to be a bumbler a la Hugh Grant, but he's just obnoxious. Bumbling is funny, charming, sweet. Emphasis on the charming. If John Spencer is charming, then Scarlett O'Hara's a nice little girl. He is rude to his friends, gets drunk every day, lies, evades consequences, and thinks lecherously about his slutty students. That's not what I want my teachers to be like.
Moving on...
The entire first half is an excuse for Trees to mention obscure books, obscurer characters, and then when he starts running out the really well-known ones. This is an exercise in ego. There's no reason for half the allusions here - they're random, and jerky, and some don't even make sense.
Okay. I don't want to think about it anymore. It wasn't funny, just bitter and lame. The writing was bad and the characters were obnoxious. John could use a good slap upside the head and frankly, so could the author. This is the kind of book that makes you feel sick to your stomach.
