I hesitated to pick up this 500+ page book with so many others in my pile, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. A fantasy for adults with fallible, endearing characters of unusual abilities and histories : The story revolves around a witch from an old and honored lineage, who has denied her magic in favor of earning a life as a historian and a 1500-year-old French vampire, now also a scientist and academic, among many other things. Their forbidden relationship threatens the fragile alliance that has kept the various creatures (witch, vampire, and daemon) coexisting, and it hinges around a special book. Filled with references to biology, alchemy, religion, literature, history, and languages, this book is the beginning of a treasure trove!
