If you have read other books in the Liaden universe then this may be a bit surprising. The other books I have read until this one and its predecessor were basically "science fiction romance." I would say that description would be turn off to me, I have read some books I would characterize that way that were bad. But these are good romances with pretty real seeming characters and interestings culture issues to explore. However, these books on Theo Waitley are both coming of age stories. They have different and believable challenges for her to face. The end of the second is a set up for the next book but in the meantime there is enough of an ending that it is a satisfying story. In fact, I would say each of these two books could be read alone.
