This is a lovely gentle book. It is a collection of short stories masquerading as a novel but labels really aren't important. What we have presented to us are seventeen snapshots, seventeen moments in the lives of an old couple, two women, one an artist, the other a writer, who have been together for a great many years. There's nothing as vulgar as a plot but there most certainly is a point to the book and it is reached in the final chapter where the relationship is put under a unique strain.
