On Stranger Tides was a surprisingly intricately researched novel. The book tells the tale of Jack Shandy, a newly recruited pirate that becomes embroiled in a plot to resurrect the dead. Zombies, voodoo, the Fountain of Youth, and the British Royal Navy are all referenced in force. Also, dear god, it's wonderful to see an accurate portrayal of the original zombie legends. Good work Tim Powers.

The book is well written, surprisingly intricate, and a fast paced story. The writing was not what I'm commonly accustomed to, but not being one to generally read - or enjoy - pirate tales and the like, I found it pleasantly engaging. I'm curious to see what the rest of his works are like, and will definitely be reading Tim Powers again.

On a side note, I don't believe the Disney film has much to do with this book. Just a head's up.
