9/27/13: I read this to a class of 7th graders this year. Once again they loved the story and we are now reading the sequel.

2/21/11: I read this book to a class of sixth graders and they absolutely loved it. It was my first time with the story also. Brian Robeson is on his way to see his father in northern Canada and is in a plane crash. He learns to survive alone in the wilderness. It is wonderful story about the process of Brian figuring out how to survive and Paulsen doesn't make it easy for him. He makes many mistakes and comes close to giving in to despair. He was a character that the kids could really relate to and when I found a class set of the sequel, The River, they were thrilled.
