really liked it
bookshelves: reviewed, dystopian

Man, YA fiction just keeps getting better and better! Why didn't they have books this awesome when I was a teen? Once I started this book, I was glued to it. Katniss is strong without being too strong, admirable, but still flawed enough to be real, and her character pulls you through unrelentingly.

Like all good dystopian fiction, this book is rife with interesting social commentary, which adds a thought provoking layer to the exquisitely paced drama. There are a lot of difficult passages in this book, where people have to make hard decisions to survive, but these are redeemed by little hints of unexpectedly poignant tenderness. I can't speak for the rest of the series just yet, but I can see for certain why these books are so popular.
