The Last Kingdom (The Saxon Stories, #1)

As historical fictions goes this was really fairly good. I did have a problem with the constant vantage point of "destiny" or fate in this one. The main character brings it up on multiple occasions, it reads like a monologue recounting his life and then at certain events it was destined to be xyz etc. Very irritating, I could have done without that. I did like the story though. I think it is an interesting time period that gets relatively little shelf time and was glad to see someone undertaking this from both the English and Danish viewpoint. I thought that was certainly to its benefit as well as the descriptions and so forth were not laborious they were very much to the point. I could not personally relate to any characters in this novel, though I can't take that as a flaw, and I think you would have to read the full series to get maximum enjoyment out of this story as this one did not make a very fulfilling "single" it obviously needs follow up reading.
