This was another one of those books that was sitting on my wife's bedstand when I ran out of things to read so I picked it up. It's well written and describes the time period 1666 and the depravities of the Plague in a small cottage in England in a way that brings the time period alive. The story is tragic and depressing much like the realities of the time period. The book falls off a cliff at the end when the main character becomes part of a muslim haram in a middle eastern country and lives the remainder of her days in splendor. I thought the author was joking when she took the reader down that path, it did make me laugh outloud but I don't think that was Geraldine Brook's intent.
