This has the usual creepiness and surprise that I have found and liked in the first two novels of this series. here, Rutledge travels to Dorset to investigate claims that a war-deranged drifter murdered his long lost wife and children. Of course the facts of the case are much different, but also involve wounded World War I soldiers and a French war bride. This is a sad and mournful story full of grief for the war and the damage it has causes. However, sloppy editing prevented this from rating 4 stars.
