The reader for the unabridged audio version of this book had a decent voice for the book, but the plot is so complicated that the book didn't translate well to audio format. I don't know if it would have been easier to follow if I'd been reading, but I found that if there was the slightest distraction from listening, I'd lose track of what was happening.

Since this was Chandler's first book, I'd give him another chance with a later mystery. The noir feel and general atmosphere was good, but the main character is such a grump that I never really rooted for him. I'm surprised that this is considered such a classic.
