I highly recommend NOT starting this book when you don't have time to read. I decided to read it just before finals and it was calling to me for a few weeks. I really enjoyed this book - it is a great work of historical fiction - set in Malaysia at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and subsequent invasion of the island by Japan.

The main character is a teenaged son of a wealthy British man and a Chinese woman (who has passed away). He has a brilliant mind and learns martial arts (among other things) from a Japanese sinsei. Their relationship becomes father/son-like and is put to the test as occupation of the Japanese takes place.

This book makes you think about destiny, where you fit into your family, and trust and loyalty. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just leave it at that.
