The first in the mystery series with Chief Inspector Armand Gamache with the Surite of Quebec. The murder being investigated is in Three Pines, a tiny village near the Canada/US border. The town is hidden away in a valley with minimal access. It is inhabited by an eclectic group of characters and artists, many of them finding refuge from their former lives outside the village. They make a fascinating ensemble as the background for a murder investigation.
