I was expecting a cozy mystery but what I got was so much more, this first book in this series gives us Maisie’s background which includes being a maid in a lady’s house so we get a bit of Upstairs, Downstairs then she was a nurse during the first world war so we have some historical fiction, plus a little wartime romance chaste as it is, being the early 1900’s.

Maisie isn’t your usual woman detective because she isn’t just the town busybody she is an actual detective. There is a case she works on which has to do with the soldiers that have come back from war and are not the same men they were when they left. This turned out to be a very powerful storyline.

I really enjoyed this book and one thing I thought I knew had happened turned out very different and pulls at the heartstrings. I will be reading the rest of this series for sure! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys strong women characters, historical fiction and cozy mysteries.
