Smiley's People is the 3rd in a trilogy of spy novels featuring George Smiley. George Smiley is now a retied spy but despite the Cold War raging on, but the secret service as he knew it has changed. There is more bureaucracy and the 'values' that Smiley remembers have disappeared. This is not a glamourous world but a dirty, deceitful and hurtful world of deception (both in his personal life and at work) filled with loss. Although set during the Cold War when the Berlin Wall still stood, this is a timeless classic and the backdrop of a divided Europe is only the bleak stage on which Smiley stands to explore the change in attitude and emotions he has found with age.
