I found this a really enjoyable work, combining two themes I love in books- fantasy elements and a Victorian setting, and doing it pretty well. One thing kept me from rating it higher. That is, I had already read The Mortal Instruments trilogy.

What's wrong with that, you ask? I mean, aren't you supposed to read that one before you read the prequel? Well, the problem is, it made me notice the utter unoriginality! Cassandra Clare just took the same characters from TMI and gave them different names and physical characteristics. The tired love triangle is there too, of course. Is she incapable of just reusing these same five or so character personalities? I really wish she could have been more original.
