** spoiler alert **
Another trip through the misogynistic fantasy of yet another straight white male. All of Preston's books that I've read so far (admittedly only 2) have fantastic life-or-death chase scenes through the desert for the climactic ending, where the beautiful woman loses her top, or at least tears her clothes up a bit. This one features a near-rape scene straight out of a male brain, where the scrappy blonde innocent is rescued at the last possible second by her heroic husband. Preston's intelligent female characters seem always to be unpleasant and no fun, unless they happen to be beautiful, in which case they never contradict male superiority and cuddle up cozily to the male-in-charge without ever threatening his leadership position. So as far as gender politics goes, this one is par for the course.
Having said that, it was good airplane reading, as it took my mind off the screaming baby three seats back and gave me a good excuse not to talk to the guy across the aisle.
I wouldn't read...more
